Where Teenagers Get Alcohol From

More and more teenagers are choosing to drink alcohol. Where do these young people get their alcohol from, and how can we stop them from drinking unsupervised?

Alcohol is something that a lot of teenagers have easy access to these days. Many teenagers take alcohol from their parents' supply stores. Often they see their parents drinking alcohol during social occasions, and decide that if they were to drink alcohol themselves it would make them feel like they were more grown-up.

Some parents believe that if they allow their child to drink alcohol it will make the act seem less rebellious, and therefore the child will be more responsible about it. This is not a good idea. Some research has found that children and teens who drink even in moderation are more likely to become alcoholics later in their lives.

Alcohol is a toxin and it is bad for the neurological development of young people. In addition, alcohol impairs judgement, and teens, with their developing brains, already struggle to make good decisions.

According to one survey about teen drinking habits and where they get alcohol from, alcohol use is incredibly common among teens:

-Two thirds of teenagers report that they can easily access alcohol in their own home without asking their parents for consent.

-Two fifths of teenagers say that they can get alcohol from the parents of one or more of their friends.

-One quarter of teens say that their own parents will freely give them alcohol.

- One quarter of teens have been given alcohol by the parents of their friends at a party.

It is illegal for an adult to give alcohol to a person that is under the age of 21. If you do this, and that teenager is involved in an accident for which alcohol was a contributing factor then you will be prosecuted. Even if you were not directly involved in the accident you could be fined or end up spending time in jail.
